A Timeline of the Renaissance

Here it is, a full page on all of the major dates of the Renaissance! Of course, the date sof the Reniassance vary greatly. For one thing, the Reniassnace hit different countries at different times, and for another thing, it's very hard to accurately measure the dates. Some historians say it took place rather early, starting in Italy around the 1300s and continuing until the 1600s. Others say that it began closer to the 1500s, in Leonardo's and Shakespeare's days, and ended around the 1700s.

Either way, I've compiled a list of dates during the Renaissance, loosely dating most major events between 1300 and 1700. Take a look!

1300s

Beginning of the 1300s: Italian Renaissance begins

 

Circa 1386: Artist Donatello born

 

1400s

1436: Johannes Gutenberg invents the printing press

 

15 April 1452: "Renaissance Man" Leonardo da Vinci born

 

1455: War of the Roses begins

 

19 February 1473: Nicolaus Copernicus born

 

6 March 1475: Artist Michelangelo born

 

6 April 1483: Artist Raphael born (although the date is just an estimate)

 

1485: War of the Roses ends (Shakespeare later bases a play off of it)

 

28 June 1491: King Henry the Eighth born

 

5 December 1492: Christopher Colombus sets foot in the"New World"

 

1495: The Last Supper painted by Leonardo da Vinci

 

1500s

Early 1500s: English Renaissance begins

 

1501: David sculpted by Michelangelo

 

1503: Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo da Vinci, takes many years

 

1508: Michelangelo starts on the Sistine Chapel, takes him eight more

years

 

Mid-1500s: Lantern Shield developed in Italy (See About the

Renaissance for more info on this strange contraption)

 

1543: Copernicus publishes Heliocentric Theory

 

7 September 1543: Elizabeth the First born (daughter of Henry VIII)

 

15 February 1564: Astronomer Galileo Galelei born

 

23 April 1564: Playwright William Shakespeare born (probably).

 

19 June 1556: King James (Queen Lizzie's heir) is born

 

 Between 1591 and 1595: Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare

 

1599: Hamlet written by William Shakespeare

 

1600s

1611: Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's last plays, is written

 

23 April 1616: Shakespeare dies

 

Circa 1700: European Renaissance officially ends
